02 / Regional household costs

The cost of basic needs.

The Market Basket Measure is an official basic-needs threshold for a reference family of four. It is not average spending, a salary target or a personal budget.

These components are already included in the total. Asking rent above is a separate measure and should not be added to this basket. MBM regions differ from metropolitan boundaries.

What the numbers mean

Dates and geography

Each measure retains its own period and geographic definition. Monthly labour figures are three-month moving averages, seasonally adjusted. Rental vacancy rates are annual; asking and paid rents are quarterly. Quality flag E means use with caution. Missing or suppressed observations show “Not available”.

Rent coverage

Asking rent is the price advertised to prospective tenants; paid rent measures rents paid by existing tenants. These experimental estimates can change with the mix of listings. Rental vacancy covers privately initiated row and apartment structures with three or more units, and is not a count of homes for sale.
